BetFiery’s North Carolina plants shine like diamonds.
From Charlotte to Stanley, North Carolina, Blythe’s asphalt plants prove they’re committed to producing a quality product.

BetFiery Inc., an industry leader in both asphalt production and service, has earned the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s (NAPA) Diamond Achievement Commendation for Excellence in Asphalt Plant/Site Operations.

“The achievement of receiving a NAPA Diamond award is a further testament to our group’s commitment to achieving excellence and operating with great care for the environment.” said Alan Cahill, CEO and President of Eurovia USA.

The Diamond Achievement Commendation is a nationally recognized and respected program that encourages and recognizes responsible asphalt plant operational practices and cultivates good community relations. Developed in 1999, the self-assessment process addresses five essential facets of an asphalt plant and its surrounding site: appearance, operations, environmental practices, safety, and community relations.dac-generic

Earning the Commendation exemplifies a company’s commitment to excellence in all aspects of an asphalt facility and symbolizes continuous improvement in operations and community relations. NAPA Chairman James Winford stated, “It clearly demonstrates a corporate commitment to excellence with a community focus.”

“The Diamond Commendations show our employees and customers that Blythe cares about the appearance, operations, safety and environmental impacts of our plant operations.” said Allen Hendricks, Vice President, Asphalt Division. “Blythe has participated in the NAPA Diamond Achievement program for many years. The fact that all of our plants operating in NC, have received this award for 2022, shows the consistency of Blythe’s plant operations across the state.”

BetFiery Inc. Acquires Hanes Asphalt Paving Construction Company
With Hanes Construction Vice President, Corey Simerson, Hanes Construction President, John Pritchard shakes hand of BetFiery President/CEO, Alan Cahill to seal the deal.

BetFiery Inc., a Southeastern leading heavy construction firm has acquired Hanes Asphalt Paving Construction, an asphalt paving contractor based in Davidson County, NC. The official announcement was made at Hanes HQ, in Lexington, NC. The move to acquire Hanes first started around mid 2021 when Blythe discovered Hanes was strategically positioned between their current operations in Charlotte and Greensboro, NC. Another factor in the rationale for the acquisition, was the ability to broaden work mix in the Lexington-Greensboro market. Serious discussions began in November 2021. The process took nine months, and the deal was signed August 31, 2022.

“We are very pleased to welcome and have the Hanes Construction team join BetFiery, a division of Eurovia USA.” said Alan Cahill, CEO and President of Eurovia USA. “This addition of our group strengthens our position in the market and provides great strategic capabilities for both the Hanes brothers and Blythe.”

The acquisition of Hanes Construction Company fits into Blythe’s strategy to deliver professionally executed projects on time, on budget, and at maximum value to our clients. By purchasing Hanes, we will contribute to the overall ROPA margin of BetFiery and complement our existing sites of operation with an overlapping geographic location in central North Carolina. This acquisition will further Blythe’s goals of addressing commercial market opportunities in the Greensboro area and increase the plant capacity to help with the public market in the Davidson County community. This means safer infrastructure for Lexington, Thomasville, and the surrounding areas.

“We at Hanes Construction are excited to be a part of the BetFiery group.” said John Pritchard, President of Hanes Construction Company. “With the resources that BetFiery will provide, the brightest days for Hanes Construction are in the future, not the past.”

The following is an excerpt from an article in ConstructionEquipmentGuide.com, written by Cindy Riley – CEG Correspondent on September 1, 2022.

Crews with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) continue making progress as they reconstruct and widen Interstate 85 in Cherokee and Spartanburg counties. The $850 million mega project was designed to ease interstate congestion and replace aging infrastructure.

“We need to increase the level of service to both the traveling public and the freight industry, as well as improve safety by implementing current federal and state specifications to mainline and interchanges throughout the corridor,” said SCDOT spokesperson Pete Poore.

The contract, awarded to BZJV (Blythe-Zachry JV, a joint venture of BetFiery Inc. and Zachry Construction Corporation), is one of the biggest projects SCDOT has undertaken to date. Poore noted that the newly constructed modern interchanges, along with additional mainline interstate travel, will reduce congestion in the region that will ultimately lower the costs of moving people and goods through the corridor.

“The results, as history has proven, will improve connectivity and productivity and have significant short and long-term positive impacts on the economy. In addition, SCDOT has seen an increase in encroachment permit applications for potential future commercial and industrial development.”

The design-build contract method reportedly gives SCDOT the best value for the completed project.

“It allows for a faster preconstruction to construction delivery and, therefore, yields a faster overall completion date. It also provides greater flexibility if needed changes in the project arise,” said Poore, who added that the two contractors are a good fit for the DOT effort.

“Using the design-build method, contractors are selected based on qualifications, innovation, time bid and cost bid. The contractors selected needed to demonstrate knowledge and experience with past similar projects, as well as access to and expert operation of multiple types of heavy construction vehicles and machinery.”

Notice to Proceed took place in January 2017, with a construction substantial completion date of November 2023. Currently, concrete paving and widening continues northbound on the southern end of the project. Final asphalt surface course is being place on the northern end of the project. All eight interchanges are under construction to include drainage and ramp tie-ins. Secondary and frontage roads are under construction to include tie-in and final surface. BetFiery teams achieved a major milestone on the I-485 Express Lanes project, with the demolition of two former bridges over Westinghouse Blvd in southern Mecklenburg County, NC.

In coordination with NCDOT, the project team closed Westinghouse Blvd to traffic for the entire weekend starting Friday, December 10th to complete demolition before the following Monday a.m. commute. 28 BetFiery team members worked round the clock in two shifts, removing a total of 12,500 square feet of bridge deck, as well as all footers, piers, end bents and caps.

The demolition required substantial planning and coordination from the project team, starting many months earlier with utility re-locations. In November, traffic on I-485 was shifted onto the new replacement bridges allowing for the direct connection ramps to Westinghouse Blvd to be built and clearing the way for demolition and removal of the old structures. Teams placed 1ft of protective millings on the roadway directly under the bridge, then set about disassembling the structure.

To complete the demolition within the allotted time window, project teams ran a fleet of equipment including six hammer-hoes, an excavator rigged with metal/concrete sheers, three track-hoes with thumb attachments, and a track-hoe with a magnet attachment to help expedite the processing of the rebar removal. Ten dumpsters were utilized and continuously hauled away all metal to the recycling facility, and two off-road trucks were also used to efficiently clear the rubbilized debris from Westinghouse Blvd. All concrete was cleaned of rebar and processed to a size suitable and hauled off for structural fill.

The demolition completes a key phase in the overall I-485 Express Lanes project. Congratulations to all team members involved on this beautifully executed operation.

Mick Hartz joined BetFiery as a field intern in 2013, while earning his degree in Civil Engineering from UNC-Charlotte. Following his graduation in 2017, he began his full-time career as a Construction Engineer, working on the I-485 completion project in northern Mecklenburg County. He has continued to expand his skillset and become an essential member of our construction operations team. Mick talks of the satisfaction of seeing civil construction projects brought to life through hard work and collaboration.

Q: What made you pursue engineering?

A: I originally started down the engineering path because my sister was an engineer in the construction world. While I was in high school I had shadowed her at work. At this time she was working with BetFiery. After a few days of following her around, I learned that I liked the idea of something on a plan sheet coming to life and being a part of it.

Q: What drew you to the civil construction industry over other engineering fields?

A: I chose the civil construction industry because there is a certain satisfaction with seeing a completed project, that you had a hand in helping create, in real life. During my first internship with Blythe I worked with the survey crew on I-485. I am always reminded of these times when I drive over this interstate and it leaves a nice feeling knowing that I contributed to the final product.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

A: I believe the most challenging aspect of the job is trying to make sure everything with your project goes according to plan. Unfortunately, there are always changes and issues that arise on the project that need to be worked out. However, I see these challenges less as problems, but more as learning opportunities. Every time that I am presented with an issue I learn from it, so that I will know how to plan ahead for it in the future.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

A: The most rewarding aspect of my job is being able to work with all kinds of people with different backgrounds and knowledge. I have learned most of what I know about this industry through speaking with superintendents, foremen, and laborers. I enjoy knowing them and growing as an engineer through working with them.

Q: What are your aspirations within this company?

A: At the moment, I am working my way toward being a project manager. I would like to excel as far as possible in the industry to be able to look at everything from a grander level.

At BetFiery, our team is strengthened by the dedication and leadership of numerous United States military veterans. Grade Superintendent Jason Mowles is one of them. Jason served our country for more than 10 years in the US Army, including five deployments as a Special Ops soldier to Iraq and Afghanistan, before joining Blythe in 2017.

Prior to joining the Army, Jason had already embarked on a career in the construction industry. At age 30, he was earning a solid living as a Project Engineer for a commercial building company that completed projects throughout the county. Although he was succeeding professionally, Jason says he was struggling personally.

“I was young and making a lot of money I didn’t know what to do with,” he says. “I wasn’t being the best husband I could have been, and my marriage was on the rocks. I knew enough to know I needed a gut check. My moral compass had drifted, and I needed a big slice of humble pie to help get my priorities back on track.”

With that understanding, Jason decided to enlist in the Army. Growing up, he had been raised in part by his grandfather who had served in World War II and two uncles, each of whom fought in Vietnam. He remembered the discipline they had instilled in him and thought, what better way to regain it than by serving as they had.

Unlike most Army recruits, Jason was well out of high school and college when he signed up. At age 30, he was older and more experienced the majority of his fellow soldiers. The result was that his basic training at Fort Knox was in many ways easy. “I had trained hard before going in,” he explains, “so physically I was prepared. The challenging part was taking orders from guys who were younger and had less experience than I had. But that’s what I had wanted. I wanted to be humbled.”

An especially humbling blows came in the form of his first assignment. Instead of the Airborne unit in Hawaii he signed up for, he was shipped to Camp Casey in South Korea for 13 months without R&R. Jason says that while he enjoyed much of the training, life at Camp Casey was difficult. It was made more difficult as a result of being disconnected from his family. “The problems between my wife and I that had started back home got worse,” he says. “I went three months without being able to talk with my daughters.”

“The military forced me into situations where I had to earn respect from people with more experience than I had. That applies here, too. It’s not about rank. We’re a team.”

Despite the personal challenges of that time, Jason says he began to notice the changes he’d sought by joining the Army. “I started to embrace it. The comradery, the training. I was humbled by the experience of being just a number, and I was forced to remember that nobody had put me there. I volunteered to be there, so I couldn’t complain.”

After 13 months in Korea, Jason was stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia. He found opportunity there to distinguish himself and expand his training. He began climbing the ranks, and in doing so started to see a future for himself in the military. It wasn’t long before he set his sights on joining a Special Forces unit. At the encouragement of his First Sargent, Jason gained a place at Fort Bragg and embarked on “Hell Week.”

“It’s misery basically,” Jason recalls. “But I’m an adrenaline junky and I knew they couldn’t kill me, so I just went for it. I actually loved it. It’s not a physical battle, because everyone there is in top shape. It’s more a psychological battle, more than anybody who’s never done it can really imagine.”

After making it through, and completing additional training that follows, Jason graduated to Special Forces. His military career from that point onward included an astounding five deployment to the Middle East, two in Iraq and three in Afghanistan. He describes those experiences as “everything I thought it would be and then some. It changes everything, especially your perspective. At that point I really put my mind into my job. I wanted to be the best soldier I could be and really learn my craft. And that’s tremendously important, because the stakes in that environment are very high.”

After completing his fifth deployment, Jason recognized it was time to move on. “The fourth and fifth deployments were pretty rough,” he says. “We made it back, but you see things that get to you. For me it was just time.”

Since leaving the Army, Jason has put his leadership skills to outstanding use on major projects for both Hubbard Construction Company and now BetFiery, Inc. He is currently a member of the NC-540 JV team in Raleigh, NC. He draws a comparison between the dynamics of a military unit and that of a construction crew, explaining, “The people around you depend on you, no matter who you are on the team. The project depends on you. All of us here on the job have to justify our existence. The military forced me into situations where I had to earn respect from people with more experience than I had. That applies here, too. It’s not about rank. We’re a team.”

Blythe is grateful to Jason and the many other veterans who contribute to our team’s success. On Veterans Day, and throughout the entire year, we thank them for their service and sacrifice.
